Foreign death certificates – what you need to know

It could easily happen that a South African citizen passes away while overseas. This article looks at how to handle this situation and what needs to be done. Why do you need a death certificate? The Births and Deaths Registration Act No. 51 of 1992 (“the Act”) requires that a person’s death be reported to specific officers at the Department of Home Affairs, amongst others. Obtaining a death certificate is necessary in order to administer a deceased estate. The person who has been appointed as the executor must take the death certificate to the Master of the High Court and apply for a letter of executorship or a letter of authority, depending on the size of the estate. New CEO announced: Institute of Retirement Funds Africa The Institute of Retirement Funds Africa has appointed Steven van Schanke as its new Chief Executive Officer. He completed his articles at KPMG and qualified as a chartered accountant in 2001, and then relocated to the UK for five years where he gained experience in a number of finance-related ventures, before returning to SA in 2006 to set up his own business. The retirement fund industry is abound with change, but requires guidance and leadership when it comes to positive and balanced transformation.

Background The IRFA will hold its series of ”An Effective Board” Trustee Training in 2014, facilitated by an accredited provider.
